    The whole Occulus rift part of this podcast is exactly why I’m done with SL. No interest in adding the Occulus rift support to SL. No need to innovate, no need to add features, they are just slowly milking SL, they have no interest in adding features and doing work on it that has no immediate monetary return. Linden Lab is no longer about innovation and creativity, they are about only one thing, that’s money, and shame on them for hiding under the veil of creativity and innovation.

    Well, I’ve talked about Occulus Rift for SL use since I saw the first trials with the dev version. I also asked in usergroup a while back, and got the expected answer that no development for Occulus Rift was going on, nor planned for within the lab, but that TPV’s was welcome to experiment with it… I’m sure that like Simons “on-the-side-project” with the Leap Motion – the dev’s will have a very hard time NOT trying it out once the Rift is in the stores. Of course, that’s not being innovative and that’s a shame. Back to your roots LL !
    Rift certainly has potential of being the biggest thing for SL in many years, if the Lab could get so excited about the damn space navigator (I got one of those too lol) they should be ready to explode just thinking about the Rift’s ability to turn SL into a truly immersible experience above anything ever seen before.
    Of course the Rift would not be something you’d be using all the time while in SL, it’d likely more be something you put on for ½ hour while exploring, flying, driving, sailing etc. to enhance those experiences – trying to build something while wearing it would probably not make things easier ;-)

    Regardless, I expect people to be screaming for support for it once they own one and have tried playing … whatever… Crysis 3 or somethings else with better graphics than the silly Team Fortress II stuff.

    I’ll def. buy one, and I *will* be screaming….

    Just a clarification about my overall role in the materials project:
    I specced out the functionality, I wrote the rendering bits for the initial prototype, and I did some of the initial work on the project with respect to rendering when we had a mechanism to pull material data from the server. I’m not the only person writing code for the project, and I won’t take credit for the whole thing.

    There’s multiple contributors on the project across the Catznip team, Firestorm team, Exodus, and Linden Lab.

    I agree with Karl that Cloud Party will have to be better than SL in order to really compete with LL. However I don’t think that will be very hard. If Cloud Party management listens to its customers, responds to their needs in a timely manor, communicates and innovates they will easily reach that 120%.

    Now CP still has a ways to go but I have seen more improvement in CP the last year than I have seen in SL in the last three. In many ways CP technically is already superior to SL.

    At the moment I am a premium member of SL. I know, crazy. I own some small pieces of properties on the different mainlands. For less than I am paying now I could get my own island in CP and that is easily well over twice the land area I have now. Well, that is not quite true. SL has a higher ceiling limit but I have a much bigger footprint. So I am really considering selling my land and ending my premium membership in SL.

    Kimberly thanks for letting everyone know why you don’t always respond to IMs. It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one who did get responses when IMing you on Skype or in SL.

    Oh, one last thing. Be nicer to Drax! You need him. He brings a good balance to the show. All four of you are a wonderful mix.

      Don’t you hate posting a reply and then realizing you made a grammatical error that changes the whole meaning? Wish we could edit our replies when that happens. “It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one who did get responses when IMing you on Skype or in SL.” Should have been, “It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one who didn’t get responses when IMing you on Skype or in SL.

      Don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to make you feel guilty Kimberly. I am sure you get hundreds of IMs everyday and probably even IMs from people you consider good friends get lost in all of it. To answer them all would probably mean you wouldn’t have time to make a living and be able to pay your RL bills.

      Keep up the good work and the podcast coming. :)

      Hey how about doing a live broadcast from Cloud Party as a comparison? Just a thought. ;)

  5. Well, I love your podcast, but the beeping required to let Reed speak his mind is starting to irritate me. Either let him use profanity, or tell him he has to stop (might be habitual and difficult to cease).
    I recommended this podcast to an oldie and they were completely turned off.

      Yeah, you could just about replace Reed with a continuous beep; the rest of the cast could just assume something negative was said and go on. Reed, if you can’t talk like a grownup, perhaps you need to stay out of public hearing.

    Cloudy Party has similar issues as Blue Mars had. If you are not a Maya user, than you pretty much can’t be a CP creator. All my normal object meshes will upload, but I can’t get anything rigged or any animation into CP. Being that there is only 1 animator selling anything in CP, I’m assuming every1 else is having the same issues. As far as I know, not even blender is currently working for CP. I told them before that they should make a bvh importer for CP. Without CP being more compatible, or tools made for it, CP will struggle to grow. Plus, the animation system is extremely primitive. There is little to no coding available to those that don’t code. As it is, a basic couch with a sit animation is about as complex as CP gets. Yeah, there are some people making some stuff, but I seriously doubt CP will ever overtake SL.

    IMHO, Bitcoin’s value has varied wildly lately because of all the hype it has gotten. There are too many speculators in the market holding Bitcoins. There aren’t enough uses for the coins yet. Not enough merchants are accepting them. As more and more online venues start accepting Bitcoins, the volatility in the value will stabilize.

      I check every week and really miss listening to all the gang. :(

      I especially want to hear from Qarl about the new things that are going on with his Mesh Deformer. I love that InWorldz is implementing it. Perhaps that will give LL a kick in the pants they need.

      There has been a lot of talk about LL creating a new better default avatar. I am sure one with more vertices. So my question to Qarl is would the Mesh Deformer code have to be changed at all in order to work with a different number of vertices?

      My second question would be if LL introduces a new avatar does that mean it have to get rid of the old avatar or can LL offer a choice to each resident as to which default avatar mesh they like to wear? Could the Mesh Deformer code as is handle multiple default avatar meshes?

      Lastly Qarl have you ever considered starting up your own grid? I am sure your sims would run much more smoothly and respond way quicker to changes wanted by your residents and advancements by open source.

    I know chances are next to nothing Qarl or Kimberly will see this message. I am so sorry to see Qarl leave SL. If he ever gets involved with another virtual world I hope he lets all of us know because I know that will be a world worth investing my time in.

    I am so sorry Metareality Pod casts seemed to have permanently stopped production. I hope it wasn’t stopped because of some sort of personal tragedy and that all of you are healthy and doing well.

    I did want to part with this one idea. It is an idea that could kinda stick it to LL or side step their interference with third party development. What if someone could use a third party viewer to log into a server, not owned by LL, that would then log onto SL with the normal default LL viewer.

    As far as LL could tell people would be logging into SL with the default viewer but the end user is really using a third party viewer that can have all the advancements and viewer side features they want without having to worry about LL getting their panties twisted in a knot breaking the stupid shared experience rule.

    This would untie the hands of the third party viewer developers and LL would be none the wiser.

    Right after I posted my previous post a thought occurred to me. What if this second server you are logging into SL with could have its own mesh objects added on top of the objects that are coming from SL’s servers. Sort of an Augmented Reality for Virtual Reality.

    The server the third party viewer is using to log into SL server would not be constrained by the old code or technology of LL. Want custom skeletons and avatar mesh that deforms no problem! Want more objects on your land but are at your limit in SL no problem. Anyone logging on through this second server would be able to see them but those who are logging in directly to LL servers would not.

    This Second Server could have its own marketplace and currency. It doesn’t even have to be limited to SL but many virtual worlds.

    LL needs to get it through their heads. There is no shared experience in SL right now. Residents can have all sorts of different graphic settings right now. One person can see daytime and another night time at that same time. You can even turn off the rendering of avatars so all you see are names floating in the air. You can turn off shine, glow, lighting effects, sky, ground everything.

    I think I will keep posting random thought or ideas here. Perhaps Kimberly or Karl will see the large number of comments and investigate.
