Kim, just to clarify a point from the podcast about Cloud Party – I’ve logged in from my Mac, but I had to use Chrome (Firefox also appeared to be supported, but I didn’t try it).

Hmm.. Good to know. Thanks for posting. So it seems the only place it doesn’t work right now is Apple mobile products because WebGL is currently not supported on IOS. I can’t imagine that staying the case though. It seems built with mobile in mind (at least to me). Not to mention that Cory is now the director of mobile engineering at Facebook, so…

Cloudly or whatever it is called is not in anyway competition for SL. I kind of get the feeling that people forget why SL became popular at all. Nobody knew about SL before you could cashout. It was the simple fact that you could run a business in a virtual world that “made” SL. I certainly would not have stayed if I hadn’t been able to cashout. Now, look what is happening. LL took over the Marketplace, and got rid of instant cashouts. Plus, LL has changed the search so it doesn’t favour merchants. It should not be a big surprise that SL is declining daily when they continue to destroy the inworld economy.

What makes Cloud Party any different than Lively, or many of the other worlds that FAILED miserably? Granted, I haven’t tried it out, but if I can’t cashout, and they have no plans for cashing out, then why would I try it?

You know what seems crazy to me? The world of virtual items is totally thriving on platforms that don’t even have a world for people to play together in. If LL doesn’t clean up it’s act soon, and start catering to merchants again, they will continue to decline, and my bet is that SL has about 2 years left. It has nothing at all to do with demand, cause the demand is obviously there.

As for SL9B, I won’t be going, as SL is no longer my prefered place to create in. Plus, as I’ve said many times about the SL birthday party, it’s illogical to put on events and no1 is aloud to sell anything. It’s counter productive. I hate to keep harping on the money issue, as sooo many hate to hear it, but you can’t sustain anything without a business plan, which the people who put these parties on simply ignore. It is exactly this kind of thinking that is destroying the world we all once loved. Just take a look at the economic figures every year when the SL birthday goes on. Economic activity gets cut in half. No smart business person in the world would allow that to keep happening. There is no reason in the world why we can’t have an economic boom during the SLB, other than a few people who don’t seem to know how the real world works.

Have you ever been to a festival, in the real world, and everything was free? On the contrary, everything is 2 to 3 times the price, yet people still go. The SLB could be like a world’s fair, where the best and brightest go to show off their newest and best product. That would be and interesting event to goto. Plus, I’d get to meet other creators like myself and talk some shop. Heck maybe even form partnerships. The SLB should be a celebration for all SLers, not just those that want to party and gossip. If you ask me, the SLB has always been the completely opposite of what SL really is and what made SL popular.

Sorry, retraction! I did check out Cloud Party. It is SL’s new competition, at least from what I saw. I still have to figure out the animation system, but it looks very promising. Much more promising that anything I’ve seen before. Oh, and I must have misheard about cashouts, cause it seems that a marketplace and cashing out is in the works. Some1 please correct me if I’m wrong here.

  4. Cathy Foil of Pretty Feet says:

I am totally excited about Cloud Party. I already got my free home there! If LL and we all play our cards right CP could be a bonus for SL not a competitor. How? By cross promoting each other. As an SL merchant I am going to be offering when you buy stuff from me in SL you will get a CP version as well and vice versa.

CP by its nature of being web browser based will be more limited than SL. So those who discover 3D virtual worlds for the first time through CP can be introduced to SL though it as they discover that SL has fewer limitations.

It be smart for LL to have an option for CP type user controls for camera and movement. You don’t want to turn off immigrants from CP on their first visit to SL.

Also it be a good idea for LL to allow the default avatar mesh to be sold or given away at CP because people like to look the same weather logged in at SL or CP. Again encouraging new CP users to come try SL.

CP so far is doing it a better way than SL by offering free homes to all accounts not just premium. Helping to encourage people to stay in world and buy stuff since they have a home to rez things permanently.

I doubt I will ever completely leave SL though there is a good chance I get rid of my land and stop being a premium member if CP really takes off and has better land pricing.

LL better take note and really think about dropping their land prices and tiers. I think it would only help the SL economy not hurt it.
