Guys, the name Second Life is the reason. Second Life assumes you don’t have a first. Open your eyes Drax. You don’t get why it has a stigma? The name itself implies you are a loser. Why would people want to go “Loserville” hey why aren’t people coming to Loserville? I can’t understand?

Just some notes of the worlds impression of SL.

LL doesn’t take hold of the marketing. This being the case, if some1 does just a few searches, it won’t be long until you will find SL videos about sex, griefing, harrasment, and so on. So, basically the world gets this view that SL that is everything a company would not want to promote to the average person.

If I were LL, I would hire or task 1 person just to make SL videos all the time. Like put out a video almost daily on their SL YouTube page. Not just promo videos, put videos showing all aspects, and everyday SL things. I know, and I’m sure Draxter knows, that if you make a video that SL people will watch, you will get a crapload of views. If LL monetized their SL YouTube channel, they would easily make enough to pay the machinima guy very well. Those videos would quickly dominate the Youtube Search.

Ditto on the pathfinding stuff, and communications. I had high hopes, and got my sim in the beta program. OMG, they really just went about it all so very wrong. I gotta say, like they didn’t even try it all out on their own sims first. Then again, the Lindens don’t have anything on their land, so how could they even know. I’d make all the Lindens actually build up and maintain their own sims, and those should be the first test areas.

The end result of pathfinding, I’m very happy with. With my limited coding skills, I’m done some amazing things with my npcs. Now I have to find a new coder to partner with, as my old coder is now in medical school. I’m very excited about the possibilities. Plus, because every1′s sim has pathfinding, making npcs and pets with it, will work awesome.

Hello :) Just discovered the podcast, cool subjects and hosts! (downloading past episodes right now).

Concerning the negative reactions to SL, I can only relate to my experience. I really wanted to get into SL – as I strongly believe in the potential of virtual worlds – but failed each time…

The first inconvenience came with the conventions used to look around, move and interact in the world. They are not intuitive for gamers or players used to MMOs. It was quickly obvious that SL wasn’t designed by people with a 3D video games culture. I also thought over that time: “what if SL had been designed by the video game industry like Valve or Blizzard…?”. Actually I still *dream* SL successors will be develop this way (http://goo.gl/S2Dv8 [Google+ post] )

I’m also concerned by the demographics. In the MMOs I explore I always ask what other “worlds” people are experiencing and I never hear SL (just once in Aion from a woman in her 20s who was more than happy to share her hot-“romantic” RP logs with the whole legion oO). Inversely the few people I know who are very active in SL are in their 30s/40s and are not gamers.

The second reason which pushed me away was the high price – and non-standard – “write” features (buying and maintaining an island?…) at a precise time where the read*write*web developed with low costs “write” features (anyone can have his website, blog, social network/media …).
What if Lindenlab designed and patented the web in place of Tim Berners Lee open vision? I guess we wouldn’t be there to discuss the subject.
SL aesthetically wasn’t probably good enough for a free “read” only experience (competing in part with the 3D “games” industry) but could have had more success with an affordable “write” experience.

I’m afraid we’re still stuck in a wrong future concerning virtual worlds but when I see successes like multiplayers Minecraft (and offsprings) i’m convinced it will come: humans are still “explorer” and not only consumers, Space is not yet accessible, I believe virtual worlds are still for now the rightful “final frontier”. Who/what/when, “make it so”? :)

  5. At about 55 minutes in or so… the whole thing about the Lindens not being excited…

    How they don’t talk anymore…

This is killing the company, killing the product, and it will kill their new products too.

You’ve got to have a face, you’ve got to talk about what you’re up to, you’ve got to show the energy, or it will die.

All is quiet on the Metafront. Are you guys OK? still living? just making sure something bad didn’t happen to anybody.

When planning a new home one of the first decision concerns finding a home plan. Once the plan has been selected it is time to consider building supplies needed. Some suppliers of plans charge a large fee for a list of materials needed. Larger homes will require more supplies than smaller ones. Additionally, creating a more complex structure needs more lumber than one that is a rectangle.`
